Men's Basketball Loses At Saginaw Valley State 74-68

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 74-68 contest to Saginaw Valley State Saturday night (February 6).

SVSU improves to 19-4 overall, 15-2 in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 12-11 overall, 8-9 in the GLIAC.

The opening half was close until the final minutes before both teams made big runs. Northwood led 21-19 with just under eight minutes remaining when the Cardinals scored 10 straight points to go up 29-21 with 3:35 remaining in the game. Northwood responded with a run of their own to finish the half, scoring 11 of the final 14 points to tie the game 32-32 at the break. Both teams made 13 field goals in the half. Northwood made two more 3-pointers (6-4), while SVSU made two more free throws (2-0) in the opening 20 minutes.

Saginaw Valley State opened up a 56-46 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game when the Timberwolves made another run. Northwood scored 13 of the next 14 points to go up 59-57 with under seven minutes to go. NU led 64-63 with under 2:30 remaining, but the Cardinals went on a final run to earn the win. SVSU scored 10 of the next 12 points to put the game away.

For the game, Northwood shot 40.3 percent overall (25-62) compared to Saginaw Valley State at 44.8 percent (26-58). The Timberwolves had three turnovers to 10 for the Cardinals, but SVSU finished with a 14-4 edge in offensive rebounds.

Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) led all players with 23 points. He also added five assists and zero turnovers in 37 minutes. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) added 12 points, while Nick Spitzley (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) added 10.

Northwood will travel to Ferris State Thursday night (February 12). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
