Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime To Southern Indiana 81-78

RECAP: Northwood men's basketball battled but dropped an 81-78 overtime contest to Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon (December 18).

FIRST HALF

  • The opening half was a low-scoring, tightly-contested 20 minutes.
  • USI scored eight of the first 10 points of the game, which matched the biggest advantage of the half.
  • The Screaming Eagles scored six of the final eight points to lead 27-21 at the break.
  • Northwood finished the first half going 10-31 from the floor, good for 32.3 percent overall. NU missed all six of their 3-point attempts and went 1-5 from the foul line.
  • Southern Indiana shot 42.3 percent in the half, making 11-26 overall. The Screaming Eagles went 2-5 from 3-point range and 3-9 from the foul line.

SECOND HALF

  • USI started fast in the second half, pushing their lead to 32-23 two minutes in.
  • That proved to be the biggest lead of the game for both teams.
  • Northwood took their first lead of the second half with just over two minutes remaining at 62-61, only to see the Screaming Eagles score five straight to take a 66-62 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
  • USI made all four of their free throws in the final 30 seconds, but the Timberwolves used a three-point play from Matthew Nowicki and a jumper from Ramelle Arnold to make it a 70-67 game with eight seconds remaining, with the Timberwolves in possession.
  • NU was just 1-11 from 3-point range entering the final possession and missed their initial 3-point attempt, but Arnold tracked down the loose ball and buried the triple from the corner to force overtime.
  • Both teams were better from the floor in the second half – Northwood was 18-33 overall (54.5 percent). The Timberwolves were 2-7 from 3-point range and 11-14 from the foul line.
  • The Screaming Eagles shot 48.0 percent in the second half, making 12-25 overall. USI was 2-8 from 3-point range and 17-23 from foul line.

OVERTIME

  • The Screaming Eagles took control in overtime right away, scoring the first seven points of the extra session in the opening 2:18.
  • NU got back within three at 79-76 with one minute remaining, but that is as close as the Timberwolves would get.
  • Southern Indiana was just 1-4 from the floor in overtime (25.0 percent), but that one field goal was a 3-pointer. USI won the game at the foul line, where the Screaming Eagles were 8-8 in the extra session.
  • Northwood went 2-8 from the floor in overtime (25.0 percent). The Timberwolves were 0-2 from the 3-point arc and 4-4 from the foul line.
