Men's Golf Ties For Seventh At The NCAA Fall Regional
The Northwood University men's golf team used a strong second round to tie for seventh out of 33 teams at the first NCAA Midwest Fall Regional Monday and Tuesday (September 29-30).
The 36-hole event was held at the Port and Starboard golf courses at the Harborside Golf Center. Both courses played as par-72's – the Port played at 6,883 yards while the Starboard measured at 6,997.
Northwood got off to a slow start in the event, standing in 14th place after the opening round thanks to a team score of 305. But the Timberwolves rallied in round two, carding a 292. That score was the fourth best of round two and allowed Northwood to move all the way up into a tie for seventh place at 597. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 585, followed by Malone at 586. The event was extremely close – only 10 shots separated third place from 13th place overall (592-602).
Leading the way for Northwood was sophomore Matt Benson (Grand Ledge, Mich.). He shot rounds of 73-72 to finishing with a one-over par total of 145, good for a tie for sixth overall. Freshman Matt Garland (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) was one stroke back of Benson at 146 (75-71), which was good for a tie for 13th. A total of 165 players took part in the event.
Northwood will compete at the GLIAC Championships October 5-7.
