Men's Golf Performs Well At the 104th Michigan Amateur Championship

SOUTHFIELD, MICH. – Members of the Northwood University men's golf team performed well at the 104th Michigan Amateur Championships, which concluded June 26.

The event was held at the Plum Hollow Country Club. Players played 36 holes of stroke play, after which the top 64 players competed in a match-play bracket. A total of 162 of the top amateur players in the state took part in the event.

Northwood had three players reach the match play portion of the bracket, highlighted by the play of sophomore Kory Roberts (Battle Creek, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.). Roberts carded rounds of 73-67 in stroke play to earn the No. 6 seed in the bracket. He then went on a run all the way to the finals, winning a total of five matches. Roberts lost in the finals to Ryan Johnson 3 & 1.

Junior Matt Garland (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) and senior Paul Ostby (Mt. Morris, Mich./Mott CC) also reached the match play portion of the tournament.  Garland won a match in the opening round before falling in the round of 32, while Ostby dropped a tough match in 19 holes in the opening round.
