No. 16 Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 To No. 6 Saginaw Valley State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The No. 16 Northwood University men's soccer team dropped the 2015 GLIAC opener 2-1 against No. 6 Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon (September 11).

The Timberwolves are now 1-1 on the early season, 0-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the GLIAC with the win.

The Cardinals netted the first goal on a surprise shot just over two minutes into the match. With keeper, Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) off the line, SVSU's Matt Wilson chipped a shot from over 40 yards out to take a 1-0 early lead. From there, head coach Doug Carter felt the Timberwolves played well. "We had the better of the first half…we failed to execute." said Carter. NU went into halftime trailing 1-0 but out-shot the Cardinals 6-3, with multiple scoring opportunities.

SVSU was able to net a second goal in the 76th minute, but Northwood responded with their first goal of the match in the 80th minute. The team's leading goal-scorer a year ago, Keaton Levock (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley (Niagara)) turned from about 25 yards out with a shot that hit the back of the net for his first goal of the season on an assist from Dominic Hart (Rotherham, England). From there, the Timberwolves pulled out all the stops and had multiple scoring opportunities, including a point-blank shot from defender Joey Censoni (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) from about five yards away. However, Saginaw Valley State's defense and keeper made multiple stops to come away with the win.

Northwood finished with an obvious advantage in shots (18-7) and corner kicks (5-0). Sterobo registered a pair of saves for the Timberwolves.

NU will be back in action next Friday (September 18), taking on Walsh at Dean Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., directly after the women's soccer team play Walsh. CLICK HERE for a complete list of promotions throughout the season.
