Men's Soccer Defeats Walsh 9-1

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's soccer team defeated Walsh university 9-1 on Friday afternoon (Sept. 18)

The Timberwolves are now 2-1 on the year, 1-1 in the GLIAC. The Cavaliers fall to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the GLIAC.

Northwood controlled the pace of play for a majority of the match. NU first got on the board when Joey Censoni (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) finished a deflection off a corner kick from Jack Smith (Milnthorpe, England) at 7:23. Shortly thereafter, James DeCosemo (Stokesley, England) put NU ahead 2-0 with bicycle kick from the PK line on a service in from Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England) in the 12th minute. The Cavaliers netted their first goal from a PK on a hand ball in the box at 13:54 to cut the lead 2-1. At the 26:14 mark, James Vaughan (Bexhill, England / St. Richards) trickled a ball past the keeper on a miscue to pull ahead 3-1. From there, Keaton Levock (Clinton Twp., Mich / Chippewa Valley) finished a pass from Zachary Bakos (Linden, Mich. / Linden) and Dominic Hart (Rothernam, England) hits the near-side post for his first goal of the season to go into halftime with a 5-1 lead.

Levock opened up the second half with his second goal of the match on another assist from Bakos at 56:17 before Mayowa Olufeko (London, England / Welling) earned a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. He was unable to convert the PK but rebounded his shot off the post to score his second goal of the season. Olufeko quickly put his second goal of the match in the back of the net on a header from a corner kick delivered by Andrew Nugent (Ipswich, England). DeCosemo picked up his second goal of the match as a defender on a header from sophomore Bryan Lawson (Troy, Mich. / Athens) at 84:44 to give the Timberwolves a 9-1 advantage.

For the match, NU held the advantage in shots (27-6) and corner kicks (8-1). James DeCosemo, Keaton Levock and Mayowa Olufeko each finished with a pair of goals, while Dominic Hart, James Vaughan and Joey Censoni each added one of their own. Jack Smith (2), Adam Thomas, Zachary Bakos (2) and Andrew Nugent each finished with assists. The Timberwolves broke a school record with the most goals scored against a Division II opponent. It is also the most goals scored in any game since Oct. 12, 2003 when the Timberwolves defeated Concordia (11-0). Northwood will be back home at Dean Field on Sunday (Sept. 20) taking on Malone.
