MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's soccer team topped Findlay 6-0 on Sunday (Sept. 27) afternoon.
The Timberwolves improve to 5-1 on the year, 4-1 in the GLIAC. The Oilers drop to 3-4 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC.
NU was able to get on the board early and often, as James DeCosemo (Stokesley, England) scored his fifth goal of the season on a cross from Keaton Levock (Clinton Top., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) in the 17th minute. Levock served the ball in on the ground from the left side for DeCosemo to finish the ball from inside six yards. Michael Ankoviak (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) netted his first goal of the season on a hard shot from the right side to beat the keeper on the near post. Junior Dalton Amez (Macomb, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) served a ball from nearly 40 yards out on the left side, off the head of James Vaughan (Bexhill, England / St. Richards) before Ankoviak finished it from nearly 10 yards on the right side.
With a 2-0 lead coming out of the half, NU maintained possession for a majority of the second period and continued to score. Mayowa Olufeko got a through ball from Vaughan near the half line, giving Olufeko a breakaway with just the keeper. After hitting the post on his initial shot, Olufeko was able to finish the rebound to put NU ahead 3-0 in the 68th minute. Shortly thereafter, Amez found the back of the net on a drop pass from Levock at about 25 yards out for his first goal of the season. Freshman Joseph Dickson (Windermere, England / Queen Elizabeth School) joined the action, as he beat the keeper after stealing the ball from a muffled Findlay pass for the first goal of his career. DeCosemo capped off the win in the 88th minute on a ball from Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England / John Hampden) for his second goal of the day.
For the match, NU held the advantage in shots (27-3) and corner kicks (7-3). James DeCosemo finished with two goals on five shots, while Joseph Dickson, Dalton Amez, Mayowa Olufeko and Michael Ankoviak each registered a goal. Recording assisted in the match were James Vaughan (2), Adam Thomas and Keaton Levock.
The Timberwolves go on the road for the next few weeks as they travel to Ohio next weekend for a match at Ohio Dominican on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lake Erie on Sunday at 1 p.m.
