No. 10 Men's Soccer Earns A 2-0 Win Over Lake Erie

MIDLAND, MICH. – The No. 10 Northwood University men's soccer team picks up a 2-0 victory over Lake Erie College on Friday afternoon (October 16).

Prior to the start of the match, the NU men's soccer team paid tribute to captain Dominic Hart's mother, who passed last Saturday to cancer.

Coming in ranked #10 in Division II, Northwood extended the school record with 10 straight wins and stand at 11-1 overall, 9-1 in the GLIAC. The Storm fall to 5-6-1 on the year, 5-4-1 in the GLIAC with the loss.

Ten minutes into the match, LEC keeper Filip Ljubevski a series of saves, as Northwood senior Michael Ankoviak (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) headed the ball to the far right side of the goal but was denied on an out-stretched keeper. Reading the play, fellow senior Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England / John Hampden) headed the rebound to the other side of the net, but with this head on a swivel, Ljubevski stuck his left hand out to slap the ball away for another save. Close to ten minutes later, senior Jack Smith (Milnthorpe, England) provided a great set piece to senior Joey Censoni (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) who headed the ball into the back of the net to put the Timberwolves ahead 1-0. The last 15 minutes of the half saw no shots allowed for both sides, as the scoreboard with those totals read 9-3 in favor of the Timberwolves at halftime.

With 28 minutes remaining in the second half, Smith took a corner kick and found Ankoviak on signature header to the far right side of the goal to put Northwood ahead 2-0. Lake Erie battled, but could not find capitalize on any of their six throughout the match. The Timberwolves finished with 16 shots and eight corner kicks. Keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) registered two saves in his seventh shutout of the season.

NU will be back in action for Senior Day on Sunday (October 18), taking on Ohio Dominican at Dean Field.
