GLIAC Champions! Men's Soccer Earns Title With 1-0 Win At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The No. 17 Northwood University men's soccer team claimed the GLIAC Championship with a 1-0 win at No. 11 Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon (October 30).

This is the first GLIAC regular season championship in program history. It is NU's second title overall, as the Timberwolves claimed the GLIAC Tournament last season.

Northwood finishes the regular season with a 14-1-1 record, 12-1-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals end the year at 14-3 overall, 12-2 in the GLIAC.

In a very even start, both teams were able to register multiple shots in the opening 30 minutes but neither was able to find the back of the net. In the 33rd minute, a foul was called on Saginaw Valley State from nearly 30 yards out on the left side which setup Northwood for a free kick. Senior Jack Smith (Milnthorpe, England) beat the SVSU keeper to the top left corner for his second goal of the season to put NU on top 1-0. The score remained that way into halftime, as Northwood held an advantage in shots (4-2) and SVSU earned a pair of corner kicks.

The Timberwolves came out of the break with a pair of quick shots but were unable to convert. While play was very even for a majority of the second half, Saginaw Valley State took the last five shots of the match. Northwood's defense would not allow a single goal, giving Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) another shutout. Sterobo earns his tenth shutout of the season and 26th of his career.

For the match, NU maintained the advantage in shots (11-10) and corner kicks (5-4). Sterobo finished with three saves, while Jack Smith netted the game-winning goal and took a total of four shots throughout the match.

With the win, Northwood will host the 2015 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The first match of the GLIAC Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday (November 6) at Dean Field between #2 Saginaw Valley State and #3 Lake Erie. Following that match, #1 Northwood will host #4 Tiffin at 1 p.m. The winners of those matches will play for the GLIAC Tournament Championship on Sunday (November 8) at Dean Field.
