Men's Soccer Advances To GLIAC Tournament Championship With 1-0 Win Over Tiffin

MIDLAND, MICH. – The No. 11 Northwood University men's soccer team advances to the 2015 GLIAC Tournament Championship with a 1-0 win over Tiffin on Friday afternoon (November 6).

The Timberwolves have not lost a match since Sept. 11 and are now 15-1-1 overall, 12-1-1 in the GLIAC. The Dragons end their season at 9-7-3 overall, 7-6-1 in the GLIAC.

Northwood maintained possession for a majority of the opening period, but neither team was able to generate much offense. Tiffin finished with six shots, while NU tallied four. Keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) registered just two saves in the first half.

The second half saw more scoring opportunities for both teams. Tiffin registered eight shots, forcing Sterobo to make multiple tough saves throughout the period. It wasn't until the 73rd minute that Northwood was able to capitalize on a throw-in and take the 1-0 lead. Senior James DeCosemo (Stokesley, England) found the back of the net after the ball bounced around on an Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England / John Hampden) header, sending the ball into the box. From there, NU was able to maintain possession and run down the clock to secure the win.

Uncharacteristically, the Timberwolves were out-shot by the Dragons (14-8) but were able to generate seven corner kicks in the match. Sterobo finished with five saves in his 11th shutout of the year.

Prior to the start of the match, the following players were recognized with All-GLIAC Awards: Johannes Sterobo [Goalkeeper of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC], James DeCosemo [First Team All-GLIAC], Keaton Levock (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley)[First Team All-GLIAC], James Vaughan (Bexhill, England / St. Richards)[First Team All-GLIAC], Michael Ankoviak (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern)[First Team All-GLIAC], Joey Censoni (Rochester, Mich. / Adams)[First Team All-GLIAC], Jack Smith (Milnthorpe, England)[Second Team All-GLIAC], and Adam Thomas [Honorable Mention All-GLIAC].

The Timberwolves will host the Lake Erie Storm on Sunday (November 8) at 1 p.m. at Dean Field for the 2015 GLIAC Tournament Championship. The Storm secured their spot in the Championship after tying with Saginaw Valley State in the first match of the semifinals on Friday and going into a shutout. The Storm were able to hold off the Cardinals 3-2 in penalty kicks.
