Track & Field Teams Compete At Spartan Invitational

The Northwood University track and field teams opened the 2014 outdoor season at Michigan State University for the Spartan Invitational Saturday (April 5).

No team scoring was taken at the event, which featured athletes from Northwood, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Lake Superior State, Ferris State, Michigan State and at the Ralph Young Track.

On the women's side, there were two national provisional qualifiers in Kelsey Burgess (Byron Center, Mich. / Grand Rapids South Christian) who earned a second place finish in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:12.81 and senior Danielle Miller (Clinton Twp, Mich. / Fraser) who finished third in the 5000 meter clocking 17:17.53. Drew Findlay (Reese, Mich.) also placed third in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:09.53, while Marsadie Cinato (Warren, Mich. / Woods Tower) placed fifth in the 400 meter running a 1:00.35.

For the men, Korvon Harris (Detroit, Mich. / Northwestern) placed second in the 100 meter dash at 11.07. The Timberwolves were all over the podium in the 400 meter dash, placingWally Clay (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern) second with a time of 50.94, Jacob Hurrell (Cadillac, Mich.) fourth at 51.25 and in fifth place Jordan Fields (Lauderhill, Fla. / Blanche Ely) ran 51.98. In the 5000 meter, Silas Dekalita (Clio, Mich./Clio) ran 14:56.43 to finish fourth, while Kyle Vandersyde (Hopkins, Mich.) finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles clocking 16.45. The 4x100 meter relay team of Harris, Hurrell, Clay and Fields placed second with a time of 43.80.

Northwood will host the annual NU Open next Saturday (April 12) on Fisher Track at Hantz Stadium. First events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.  Admission for spectators will be $5.00. NU teams, parents and alumni are invited to join a family and friends barbeque following the meet.
