Indoor Track & Field Teams Kickoff Season At SVSU Holiday Open

SAGINAW, MICH. - The Northwood University track and field teams opened their indoor season at the new SVSU Fieldhouse for the annual SVSU Holiday Open meet Friday afternoon (December 5).

No team scoring was taken at the event, which featured athletes from Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Lake Superior State, Siena Heights, Alma College, Macomb College, Central Michigan and the Waterloo Track Club.

On the women's side, Dana Turner (Maywood, Ill. / Walther Lutheran) finished third in the long jump with a mark of 5.24 meters. Kara Young (Zephyrhills, Fla.) had two third-place finishes, recording a 26.12 200 meter dash and a 7.93 in the 60 meter finals. Junior Hunter Perry (Moran, Mich. / Rudyard) also finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 13.91 meters.

Also competing for the Timberwolves were Kaitlyn Marsh (Munising, Mich.) in the 800 meter dash for a fifth place finish with a time of 2:39.25. Valencia Lynch (Flint, Mich. / Carman-Ainsworth) finished sixth with a 1:01.16 in the 400 meter dash, while Darci Asel-templin (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) was right behind at 1:02.76. The team of Madison Arnouts (Grand Ledge, Mich.), Asel-templin, Drew Findlay (Reese, Mich.) and Lynch finished fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:10.39. Arnouts ran a 10.07 in prelims and 10.10 in the finals for an eighth place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Findlay finished at 10.45 in the hurdles.

For the men, three Timberwolves earned a first place finish. Jeremy Wilchcombe (Freeport, Bahamas / St. Georges / NU-TX) had a record-breaking night with an NCAA provisional qualifying 14.38 meter triple jump. Wilchcombe's first place jump tops that of Tim Davis (1987) in the Northwood record book. Josh Gardner (Howell, Mich.) also took first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.53. John Thompson (Albuquerque, N. Mex. / NU-Texas) placed seventh with 23.22, while Jalen Hodgson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Parchment) earned eleventh clocking 23.84. Wally Clay(Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern) took first in the 400 meter dash with 49.20, while Tray Thompson (Fort Worth, Tx. / Duncanville / NU-Texas) finished third at 50.21. John King followed with 52.07 and Joey Davis (Fair Haven, Mich. / Algonac) ran 52.14.

Northwood's 4x400 meter relay team of Clay, Jordan Fields (Lauderhill, Fla. / Blanche Ely), Tray Thompson and Wilchcombe finished second with a time of 3:21.60. In the 60 meter hurdles, Kyle Vandersyde (Hopkins, Mich.) took third with a time of 8.65 and Fields placed fifth at 8.80. Gardner placed third in the 60 meter dash clocking 7.14, while Karmine Jarmon (Chicago, Ill. / Simeon) and Jalen Hodgson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Parchment) each ran 7.22 for sixth and seventh place. Payton Coffey (Carleton, Mich. / Carleton Airport) also ran 7.44 in the prelims of the 60 meter dash. In the 800 meter dash, Stefan Hayes (Farmington, Mich.) ran 2:02.20 good for fourth place, while Grant Harris (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) clocked 2:11.57. Exhildi Prekaj (Walled Lake, Mich. / Central) threw the shot put 14.09 meters for fourth place, Paul Evans (Lenox, Mich. / New Haven) threw 12.66 meters for eighth and Austin Plamondon (Traverse City, Mich. / Central) took ninth with a throw of 12.34 meters. Evans threw 15.27 meters in the weight throw for fourth place, while Prekaj threw 13.04 meters and Plamondon marked 10.38 meters. John Thompson took fifth with a long jump of 6.52 meters, while Sander jumped 5.47 meters.

The Timberwolves will be back in action after Christmas break at the Mike Lintz Open. The meet will be hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. on January 16.
