D’Almeida’s Weight Throw Highlights Track & Field At Bob Eubanks Open

RECAP: Northwood University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams returned to competition at the Bob Eubanks Open Friday (January 12). D'Almeida's weight throw and Phillips's school record highlight the first meet back after the winter break for the Timberwolves.

INSIDE THE MEET

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

• Freshman Mason Phillips continued to impress for the Timberwolves. In his first collegiate 300 meter dash, Phillips won the event with a time of 34.64 and setting a new school record in the event by more than a full second. Travis Blunt set the previous record back in 2013 with a time of 35.81
• Phillips also finished second in the long jump. His distance of 7.06 meters/23 feet-02 inches came on his last jump of the competition.
• Senior Paul Evans improved his season best and provisional mark in the weight throw. Evans longest throw measured 18.58 meters/60 feet-11.5 inches to win the event on his final throw of competition. He improved
• Nathan Powers earned himself a new personal best in the shot put by more than two meters. The freshman had a put of 15.06 meters/51 feet-3 inches on his second throw of the competition, and his mark stood in the finals for a third place finish. Powers' previous collegiate best was 12.98 meters/42 feet-7 inches from the SVSU Holiday Open in December.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

• Senior Carly D'Almeida had a brilliant day in the circle for weight throw. D'Almeida launched herself to a new personal best and new NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 18.45 meters/60 feet-6.50 inches. In fact, all of her throws in today's competition were better than her previous personal best of 16.89 meters/55 feet-5 inches set at the Findlay Elite meet in January 2017. D'Almeida currently sits in seventh place on the NCAA qualifying list at the time of this article.
• Junior Heaven Powell continued her season dominance in the high jump, winning the event with a clearance of 1.62 meters/5 feet-03.75 inches

The Timberwolves will travel to Hillsdale College for the Hillsdale Conference Crossover Saturday (January 20). Competition is set to start at noon.
