Evans, Gharsalli Notch NCAA Qualifying Marks To Lead Track & Field At Al Owens Classic

RECAP: Rami Gharsalli and Paul Evans add provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships to highlight track & field's weekend at GVSU's Al Owens Classic Friday-Saturday (April 20-21).

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

  • Junior hurdle specialist Rami Gharsalli had his outdoor debut in the 110-meter hurdles. He finished first in the preliminaries with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 14.51 seconds. Gharsalli later went on to win the event in 14.23 seconds to improve on his NCAA provisional qualifying mark. He now sits 15th on the qualifying list for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Charlotte, NC.
  • Senior Paul Evans claimed a third-place finish in the hammer throw. His mark of 58.98 meters/193 feet-6 inches on this third throw of the competition surpassed the NCAA provisional standard for the fourth time this season.
  • Evans came back on the second day of competition and hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the discus on his fifth throw of the competition. His best throw of 50.21 meters/164 feet-9 inches earned him a third-place finish and now ranks 29th in NCAA Division II.
  • Junior Ben Quella earned second place honors in the javelin throw with a mark of 53.28 meters/174-10.
  • Sophomore Austin Hamlet finished fifth in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a qualifying time of 11.03 seconds, then followed up with a time of 10.98 seconds in the finals to maintain fifth place.
  • Sophomore Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty cracked the all-time performance list in the 800-meter run. His season best time of 1:55.42 moves him into the 10th spot on the list.
  • On his sixth and final throw of the competition, freshman Hunter Berecz hit a strong mark of 14.70 meters/48 feet-2.75 inches in the shot put for fifth place, just shot of his outdoor best of 14.72 meters.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

  • Senior Carly D'Almeida had her best throw of the hammer competition on her final attempt, notching a mark of 48.60 meters/159 feet-5 inches for sixth place.
  • In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Madison Arnouts crossed the finish line in 1:02.49 for a fourth-place finish. Arnouts' time was .40 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. She has improved in each of her 400-meter hurdle races every time she has stepped on the track (1:09.10, 1:05.52, 1:03.48, and now 1:02.49).
  • Senior Dana Turner turned in a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a clearance of 5.32 meters/17 feet-5.5 inches.
  • Freshman Morgan Bolinger hit a nice 27 second PR in the 3000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 12:18.56 to move into fifth all-time in school history.
  • Freshman Jessica Kursinsky finished seventh in the shot put and hitting a strong mark of 12.22 meters/40 feet-1.25 inches to move into third all-time on NU's performance list.
  • Freshman Jessica Marvin finished ninth in shot put finals with a distance of 11.59 meters/38 feet-0.25 inches to improve on her fifth position all-time. Marvin also finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 37.18 meters/122 feet to improve on her fifth all-time performance in school history.
  • Sophomore Hannah Gearhart had a big weekend. In the hammer throw, she hit a PR mark of 41.43 meters/135 feet-11 inches and now sits as the fifth best hammer thrower in NU history. Then in the discus, her first throw of the competition landed at 37.73 meters/123 feet-9 inches earned her a seventh-place finish and moves into fifth on NU's all-time performance list.
  • On the first day of competition, junior Riley Johnson posted a mark of 32.81 meters/107 feet-8 inches in the javelin throw, good for a fourth-place finish in the competition.

  • Northwood will compete in the Ashland Alumni Open Friday-Saturday (April 27-28) and the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays Saturday (April 28) for their final meet before the GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
