Track & Field Takes Gold in Multiple Events at Mike Lints Alumni Open

OVERVIEW 

MEET: Mike Lints Alumni Open     

LOCATION: Allendale, Michigan – Grand Valley State University

RECAP: For the second consecutive week, the Northwood track & field teams made their presence felt during a weekend in Allendale, MI. NU traveled to GVSU to compete in the Mike Lints Alumni Open (January 22). 

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • Northwood swept the podium finishes in the 800 en route to taking the top four and taking five of the top seven spots.
  • Stephen Barker took gold in the 800, finishing at 1:51.78, followed by Dillan Haviland (1:52.55-PR), Josiah Morse (1:54.42), and Preston Earl (1:55.66-PR).
  • Finishes by both Barker and Haviland met the NCAA provisional mark. 
  • NU also took gold in the 4x400 relay at 3:22.49. Runners Thomas Heslip, Josh Jones, Stephen Barker, and Josiah Morse teamed up to compete for NU. 
  • Nathan Powers placed second in the weight throw invite with a 19.16 meter toss. His furthest throw measured in at 18.43 meters. Both Powers brothers each cleared the NCAA provisional mark.
  • Dylan Powers' toss of 18.28 meters in the weight throw was a new personal best and moves him into fourth place in school history.
  • Northwood again made its presence felt in the mile race. NU had eight runners land in the top-20, and for the second week in a row, at least four top-10 placers.
  • Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty led the way for the Timberwolves this week, eclipsing his recently broken personal record best at 4:10.26. His finish also landed him past the NCAA provisional mark. 
  • Zane Aldrich set new personal bests in the mile and 800 meter events. Aldrich placed eighth in the mile (4:14.73) and seventh in the 800 (1:58.02). 
  • Josh Jones continues to get faster as he set his new PR at 4:16.48 while finishing ninth during the mile.
  • Brandon Boyd set a new personal record during the mile. His tenth-place finish at 4:18.08 gave the Timberwolves their fourth top-10 finish.
  • Will Nemecek finished fifth in the shot-put event with a 15.28 meter toss.
  • Jordan Taiwo gave NU another top-5 finish, jumping 6.36 meters in the long jump. Taiwo placed fifth. 
  • Northwood had another trio of runners achieve personal bests during the mile in Carson Laney (4:21.75), Andrew Wendler (4:22.31), and Jackson Turnbow (4:25.59).

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Jessica Kursinsky placed second in the shot-put invite with tosses of 13.4 and 13.47 meters. Her finish gives her two podium finishes in as many weeks, both second place. 
  • Avery Stadt had herself a day during the 800. Stadt finished first during the section two timed finals. She later set a personal record and finished third in the finals at 2:22.57.
  • Isabel Anderson set an indoor personal best as she improved on her last performance and cleared 1.56 meters in the high jump. Her performance moves her into fourth place in school history for the indoor high jump.
  • Alexis Kaanta set a personal best in both the long jump and the 60-meter dash. Kaanta finished seventh in the long jump at 4.58 meters and had an 8.52 second 60 meter dash.
  • Emily Coulter finished the shot-put events in seventh with throws of 9.29 and 9.51.
  • NU had a pair of athletes run well in the 3000  in Katherine Wozniak and Kameron Haag.
  • Katherine Wozniak had a podium finish in the 3000 meter event. Wozniak placed third in the 3000 with a time of 11:07.19.
  • Kameron Haag finished just behind Wozniak in fourth with a time of 11:13.93.

  • The Timberwolves track & field teams are set to be back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Jet's Pizza Invitational at SVSU (January 28 and 29).
