Track & Field Sets Records During Big Days at Big Meet

MEET: GVSU Big Meet


LOCATION: Allendale, MI – Grand Valley State


RECAP: The Northwood Track & Field team competed in one of their largest events of the year this week at the GVSU Big Meet (February 11 and 12). Athletes spanned from over 150 institutions and multiple Division I schools in attendance. This was a weekend that tested the Timberwolves in all aspects.


• The Timberwolves mid-distance runners came up big and had some career days at GVSU. NU had numerous runners place times in both program and personal record books. This was the third time a school record has been broken this season

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • For the second time this season Dillan Haviland and Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty both eclipsed the previous school record in the mile. Both runners cleared the NCAA provisional record by multiple seconds.
  • Haviland finished third in front of numerous Division I athletes with the school record of 4:06.14. Haviland improves on his best mile time by over three seconds.
  • Mancillas-Finnerty placed 11th at 4:08.63 also cleared the previous program record and personal records in the mile.
  • Stephen Barker led the Wolves in heat two of the 800m. Barker placed seventh overall with a personal best time of 1:50.48 which is good enough for second place in program history and clearing the provisional mark.
  • Josh Jones' 1:50.83 personal best finish in heat three of the 800m was good enough for third in school history. His finish placed him 11th overall and cleared the provisional mark.
  • Josiah Morse finished just behind Jones at 1:52.73 in the 800m.
  • The combo of Haviland, Mancillas-Finnerty, Barker, and Jones finished second in the distance medley relay behind their 9:45.33 time. The time was forty seconds faster than the previous NU record set back in 1979. 
  • The Powers duo continues to impress on for NU throws. Nathan Powers cleared the provisional record by throwing 19.28m in the weight throw invite.
  • Dylan Powers continues to get better and better as he set a new personal best at 18.38m in the weight throw. His throw also cleared the provisional mark.
  • Brandon Boyd (15:00.92) and Carson Laney (15:05.28) gave the Timberwolves two more top-10 finishes the 5k. Boyd placed eighth in heat five while Laney placed ninth in heat six.
    Boyd lowered his record time by 2.4 seconds and stayed steady at seventh place in school history.
  • Laney cleared his personal best by nearly 14 seconds and moved into ninth place in school history.
  • Andrew Wendler (15:10.60) did his work in the 5k placing 13th and dropping his record by over two minutes. Wendler's time placed him tenth in program history in the 5k.
  • Lucas Oberle and Jackson Turnbow also competed in the 5k. Each athlete competed in the first collegiate 5k event. Turnbow finished at 15:46.34 while Oberle finished at 15:47.98 in separate heats.
  • Xzavia Price competes in his first indoor meet since December 3 at the GVSU Holiday Open. Price placed fourth in the long jump clearing 6.89m.
  • Preston Earl set a new PR in the 800m at 1:54.58.


INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN
• Jessica Kursinsky cleared the NCAA provisional mark in the shot put invite, throwing her furthest at 14.09m. This was Kursinsky's furthest mark this season.
• Taky Ezell improved on her personal best performance last week by eclipsing the NCAA provisional by 1.35m by throwing 18.43m.
• Kameron Haag set a new personal best in the 5k by nearly eight seconds. Haag finished at 19:18.44.
• Katherine Wozniak also competed in the 5k and ran at a 19:35.08 clip.
