Track & Field Sets New Records At GVSU's Big Meet

OVERVIEW 

MEET: BIG MEET

LOCATION: ALLENDALE, MICH. – GRAND VALLEY STATE

RECAP: Northwood track & field traveled to Allendale, Mich., Friday and Saturday to compete in GVSU's Big Meet (February 10-11). Over 70 schools were represented between the men's and women's sides, along with over 500 athletes competing. The Timberwolves set two new school records and nine personal records in the process.

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN 

  • Nathan Powers (20.51m – second place) continued to cement himself as a Northwood great. Powers reset his Northwood weight throw school record by extending his mark by 15 cm. All six of Powers' throws during the meet cleared the 19-meter mark as he hit the 20.51m on his final throw. He now has the fourth-best toss in DII this season.
  • Zane Aldrich returned to the track, and he too also put himself atop the NU history books. Aldrich's 14:16.17 finish during the 5K set a new personal record (PR) and is the best time in Northwood history for the indoor 5K. Aldrich's time is the 21st-best time in DII this season.
  • Xzavia Price won the long jump with a 7.06m mark. Price also placed sixth during the 60m finals finishing in 6.90.
  • Josh Jones ran a 1:52.10, 800m race. Jones placed seventh, clearing the NCAA mark in the process.
  • In the 3K, Carson Laney set a new PR with his 8:30.73 finish. Laney moved into fifth place in program history with his new PR.
  • Brandon Boyd also set a new PR during the 5K. His 14:54.32 finish improves his sixth-best time in NU history.
  • Dillan Haviland (4:07.80) and Preston Earl (4:12.11 – PR) competed for Northwood in the mile. Haviland cleared the NCAA mark, while Earl set a new PR to improve his fourth-best Northwood mark.
  • In the shot, Zechariah Stickler placed third with a 17.20m toss. His teammate Will Nemecek set a new PR at 16.99m as he finished fifth to move into third in program history and gain the 23rd-best throw in DII this season.
  • Sebastian Tesch hit another NCAA mark during the weight throw. He placed seventh overall with his best toss of 18.43m.
  • Sam Smith (15:13.09), Lucas Oberle (15:26.60 - PR), and Todd Henley (15:30.49 - PR) also ran the men's 5k. Oberle and Henley each set new personal bests.
  • In the distance medley relay (DMR), Earl, Elliot Lipe, Jones, and Haviland finished third, running the second fast DMR in program history (9:49.69).

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Katherine Haupt ran just off her personal record pace in the 800m. Haupt finished at 2:18.52, placing 28th.
  • Lillian Albaugh placed seventh in the shot-put invite with a 13.12m mark.
  • Sophomores Kameron Haag (18:42.76) and Sarah Zehr (18:46.60) ran the women's 5k for Northwood. This was Zehr's first indoor collegiate 5k as she moved into 10th all-time on NU's indoor 5k list.

UP NEXT

  • Northwood track & field will gear up for one last indoor meet at the SVSU tune-up next weekend (February 17) before the G-MAC conference championships at the end of the month.
