Track & Field Sets New PRs At Bill Bippes Classic

OVERVIEW 

MEET: Bill Bippes Cougar Classic

LOCATION: Spring Arbor – Lansing, Mich.

RECAP: Northwood men's and women's track & field competed at the Bill Bippes Cougar Classic, Friday (March 31).

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • For the 110m hurdles, Matheu Morrison landed himself in NU's history books with a new personal record (PR). He moves into tenth all-time with a 15.11 finish. Morrison won the race beside Blake Vier (15.39). Vier finished just behind him in second. 
  • Training for the decathlon, Jordan Taiwo competed in the 110m hurdles (16.45 PR – fourth) as well as the high jump (1.75m - sixth) and set a new PR in the javelin by almost 20 meters (40.85m PR – second).
  • Preston Earl (3:57.71) won the men's 1500m race, while Elliot Lipe (4:06.06 – fourth) finished in the top five also.
  • In the men's 5K, Northwood had four runners finish in the top five. Brandon Boyd led all NU runners, winning the race in 14:54.96, just two seconds off his PR. Carson Laney (14:59.55 PR – second) and Lucas Oberle (15:04.74 PR – third) set new PRs to move into seventh and tenth, respectively, in NU history. Todd Henley (15:55.03) rounded out the Timberwolves in the top five.
  • Sebastian Tesch is now ninth in NU history after his 52.75m PR during the hammer throw. 
  • During the shot put, Will Nemecek and Travis Schepers repped the Blue and White. Nemecek won the event with a 16.17m mark just ahead of Schepers' 16.14m mark. 

 INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • For the 1500m, Katherine Haupt's PR moved her to ninth in NU's 1500m history books. She won the race while teammates Sarah Zehr (4:58.76 PR) placed second and Taylor Hopkins (5:11.05) took third, rounding out the podium finishes.
  • Emily Coulter hit the 36-meter mark during the javelin again. Her 36.02m mark won the throwing competition by a meter and a half.
  • Avery Stadt took silver in the 800m, finishing in 2:27.62. This was Stadt's first competition since the Louisville Classic (October 3) cross-country meet last fall.
  • Three NU runners placed in the top five of the 200m dash. Freshman Vivian Williams (27.10 PR) led the pack, taking third, while Molly Kitson (27.66 – fourth) and Gabby Jones (28.01- fifth) placed just behind.
  • Alexis Kaanta took first in the triple jump (9.94m) and fourth during the long jump (4.29m), just ahead of teammate Rebecca Hoonhorst (3.92m) who took fifth.
  • In the women's 5K, Northwood had three runners finish in the top six. Kameron Haag led all NU runners, winning the race in 18:19.07, setting a new PR and moving into sixth on the all-time list. Molly Dickinson (20.26.28 – third) and Hattie Veenkant (20:50.69 – sixth) rounded out the Timberwolves in the top six.

UP NEXT

  • Northwood track & field will be back to split squads next weekend as they travel to Kalamazoo or Rochester, Mich. to compete at the Jack Shaw or Golden grizzly Invitationals at either Oakland or Western Michigan (April 7-8).
