Softball Opens Season With Pair of Victories

The Northwood University softball team got their 2013 season off to a great start by winning a pair of games at the Holiday Inn Classic Saturday afternoon (February 23).  Northwood opened the season by defeating No. 1 ranked Valdosta State 7-6 before defeating West Florida 5-2.

Valdosta State stands at 11-2 overall.  West Florida is 5-5.

Northwood started well in the opener against top-ranked Valdosta, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.  All three runs were plated on a bases-clearing double by Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini).  NU then made the score 5-0 in the third.  Marisa Borkowski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) had a RBI single, plating Paige Shields (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina) before Zaborowski plated another run on a squeeze bunt.  Valdosta rallied back to tie the game with five runs in the bottom of the third, but it was Zaborowski who once again came through with the key hit of the game.  Her two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the game-winning hit of the game.  Valdosta scored one in the bottom of the seven, but were unable to tie the game.  Zaborowski finished the game 2-2 with six RBI's.  Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) added three hits.  Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) earned the win in the circle, allowing six runs in seven innings of work.

In the West Florida game, Northwood trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning when the Timberwolves offense got going.  NU plated four runs in the inning.  The scoring started with a Klonwoski RBI single, which was followed by a Zaborowski RBI single.  Northwood then made it 4-1 on a Lindsey Obremski (Williamsburg, Va./Dubois Area) two-run homer.  Borkowski rounded out the Northwood scoring in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff home run.  Freshman Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) picked up the victory in her first career start, allowing two runs while striking out five in a complete game effort.

Northwood will take on Valdosta State and West Florida once again Sunday (February 24).
