Softball Drops Pair At NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, FLA. - The Northwood University softball team drops a pair of games Saturday evening (March 7) at the 2015 National Training Center Spring Games. The Timberwolves dropped an eight-inning 5-4 loss against Northern State before falling to Shippensburg 3-2.

Northern State is now 4-2 overall on the season. Shippensburg stands at 2-0. 

NSU was the first team to score but the Timberwolves responded in the top of the second on a solo homerun by Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va. / Dubois Area). Obremski put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the fourth to give NU a 4-2 lead. The Wolves hit a homerun of their own in the bottom of the inning. Despite having bases loaded for both teams in the fifth, neither team was able to capitalize as Northwood held a 4-3 lead into the seventh. NSU tied the game on an RBI double, sending the game into extra innings. The Timberwolves were able to score on a sacrifice fly but Northern State put two on the board in the bottom of the inning to finish close out the game. Obremski finished with four RBIs on two homeruns, while Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) and Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, ON / Christ the King Catholic Secondary) each scored a run. Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) allowed one earned run agagainst 21 batters before being relieved in the fifth by Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) who picked up the loss in the circle. Sebald allowed three runs in three innings against 16 batters. 

After trailing 2-0 early, NU plated their first run in the bottom of the third and second run in the fifth to tie the game. Neither team scored until the Raiders registered the game-winner in the top of the seventh. Northwood had plenty of scoring opportunities, leaving three runners on base in the first, fourth and seventh and a total of 11 in the game. D'Avilar and Christy Pladies (North Muskegon, Mich. / Whitehall) earned the runs for Northwood while Tostrud and Lyndsey Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning) picked up the RBIs. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich. / Dundee) tallied 13 strikeouts against 26 batters and allowed just a single run in 6.1 innings pitched. Senior Kayla Gust (Port Hope, Mich. / Port Hope) picked up the loss from the mound after allowing two runs in the top of the first.

Northwood will play a pair of games Sunday afternoon (March 8). NU will face St. Cloud St. at 1 p.m. followed by Indianapolis at 3 p.m.
