Softball Drops Pair In Florida

CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northwood University softball team dropped a pair of games in Florida Monday afternoon (March 9). NU lost to No. 15 Winona State 6-2 before falling to Truman 9-1 in six innings.

Northwood falls to 0-7 on the year with the losses. Winona State is now 11-1 overall, while Truman improves to 6-4.

Against Winona State, the Warriors gained an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  WSU then plated three in the fourth and two in the sixth to lead 6-0. Northwood fought back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring runs on RBIs by freshmen Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich.) and Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy). NU had two runners on base when the game came to an end.

Winona State finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in hits. Five different Timberwolves had singles to lead the Northwood offense.

Northwood fell behind Truman 1-0 in the bottom of the second, but fought back to tie the game in the third inning. Sophomore Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) had an RBI double that plated Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) to level the score.

Truman broke open a close game in the fifth inning. The score was still 1-1 with one out in the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldogs power took over. Truman hit five home runs in the fifth and sixth inning en route to eight runs and the win. The Bulldogs out-hit Northwood 12-5 for the game. D'Avilar and Tostrud each had two hits in the game.

Northwood will face Queens (NY) and IUP Tuesday (March 10). Game times are set for 9 and 11 a.m.
