Softball Splits Pair To Wrap Up Florida Trip

CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northwood University softball team finished its spring trip by splitting a pair or games. The Timberwolves started the day with a 5-4 win over Philadelphia University before falling by the matching score of 5-4 to Minot State.

Northwood finishes the trip with a 3-12 record. Philadelphia is 0-1 while Minot State stands at 15-4.

The Philadelphia game was scoreless until the third inning when both teams scored a run, with NU's coming on an RBI single by freshman Meghan Franz (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer). The Timberwolves made the lead 3-1 in the fifth thanks to sacrifice flies by Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) and Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western).  Philadelphia responded with two runs in the sixth to take the lead 4-3.  But the Timberwolves bounced right back with two runs to earn the win. Shelby Tulk (Elk Rapids, Mich.) scored on an error, which was followed by an RBI groundout by Lynn to put Northwood back on top.  Philadelphia put runners on second and third with two outs but was unable to plate the tying run.

Lynn led the way for Northwood offensively, finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Eight other Timberwolves had one hit each. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) allowed two earned runs while striking out six to earn her third win of the season.

Against Minot State, Northwood got on the board in the first inning thanks to a Lyndsey Look (Pinconning, Mich.) RBI double that plated Lynn. Minot State responded in a big way in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits to go up 4-1. The Timberwolves cut the lead down to 4-2 in the third thanks to an RBI single by Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich.) that plated her sister Lyndsey.  Once again, the Beavers responded, plating a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2.  Northwood fought back in the sixth with two runs, thanks to RBI hits from Lynn and Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford).  NU was unable to get a runner on base in the seventh, however, giving the win to the Beavers.

Northwood will return to action with a home game against Davenport March 24. The doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m.
