Softball Splits Pair At Tiffin

TIFFIN, OHIO – The Northwood University softball team split a pair of games at Tiffin Monday afternoon (March 30). Northwood picked up a 1-0 win in game one before falling 3-1 in game two.

Northwood is now 5-14 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC. Tiffin stands at 12-10 overall, 3-1 in the GLIAC.

After three scoreless innings, NU got on the board on a Meghan Franz (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) sacrifice RBI. Jessica Tostrud's (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) run proved to be the lone score in the game.

Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) finished 2-3 for Northwood's only two hits of the game. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich. / Dundee) pitched the third shutout of her career. Ewing recorded nine strikeouts against 25 batters while allowing just three hits.

Game two proved to be low scoring as well, as neither team was able to plate a run in five complete innings. The Dragons were the first to get on the board, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Northwood's Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich.) registered her first career homerun to lead off the bottom of the seventh but NU was unable to score any more.

Wontorcik was Northwood's only offense in game two, going 1-1 with her solo homerun. Gietl went 2-3 with two doubles in the contest.

The Timberwolves will host Lake Superior State on Wednesday for the 2015 GLIAC home-opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
