Softball Splits Pair Against Findlay

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team split against Findlay on Saturday afternoon (April 11). NU fell 4-3 to UF before earning a 7-5 win.

The Timberwolves are now 7-18 on the season, 4-6 in the GLIAC. The Oilers are 16-12 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC.

In game one, both teams got on the board in the second inning with Findlay plating two runs before Northwood's five hits allowed them to take a 3-2 lead. Pitching and great defense from either team kept the score at 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh. UF scored a pair of runs in the top of the inning to take the win.

Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) went 2-3, scoring a run.  Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich. / Dundee) recorded 10 strikeouts in the loss.

Findlay was the first to score in game two with a run in the bottom of the third. Northwood tied the game in the top of the fifth and took the look 2-1 in the sixth. The Oilers again took the lead, 3-2, on a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. The Timberwolves tied the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. NU took advantage of the extra inning, scoring four runs in the eighth, including a three-run homer by freshman Laura Walton (Clare, Mich.). Findlay was only able to score two runs in the bottom of the inning, giving Northwood the 7-5 win.

Ostapowicz had another great game at the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI and scoring two runs. Walton finished 2-3 with three RBI's and scoring two runs of her own. Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, ON / Christ the King Catholic Secondary) added a pair of hits, including a triple and a stolen base in the win.
