Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Hillsdale

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team finished the weekend with a sweep against Hillsdale on Sunday afternoon (April 12). The Timberwolves earned a comeback 5-4 win in game one before posting an 8-3 game two victory.

NU improves to 9-18 overall, 6-6 in the GLIAC. The Chargers fall to 13-15 on the year, 4-6 in the GLIAC.

In game one, Northwood struggled on offense registering just a single hit through four innings. It wasn't until Lyndsey Look's (Pinconning, Mich.) homerun to lead off the bottom of the fifth that the Timberwolves saw life. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, Northwood put together a string of singles to plate three runs and tie the game. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) hit a shot to right field, scoring Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, ON / Christ the King Catholic Secondary) from second to win the game.

Northwood finished the game with 10 hits and left just two runners on base. Look registered two RBI's and a homerun, while D'Avilar was 2-3 and Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) went 3-4 as they each scored a run. Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) picked up her first win of the season in three innings pitched.

The Timberwolves' offense was a different story in game two, plating two runs in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Holding a 2-1 advantage through four innings, NU's Tostrud led off the top of the fifth with a homerun to spark a three-run inning. The Timberwolves plated a pair in the sixth and another in the seventh to pull away with an 8-3 win.

NU registered a total of 14 hits in game two from nine different players. Tostrud finished the game 3-4 with a double, a homerun and two RBI's. Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va. / Dubois Area) and Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) also registered two RBI's in the game. Sebald pitched a complete game and earned her second win (2-10) after allowing just two runs.
