Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Malone

FINDLAY, OHIO – The Northwood University softball team played a makeup game against Malone in Findlay, Ohio Tuesday afternoon (April 14). NU earned a 13-5 win in game one before downing the Pioneers 10-5 in game two.

The Timberwolves improve to 11-18 on the year, 8-6 in the GLIAC. MU falls to 3-11 overall, 0-15 in the GLIAC.

Northwood got on the board early and often, scoring 12 runs in the first three innings. NU held Malone to just two runs in that time. The Pioneers plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth but wouldn't score the remainder of the game. Northwood held the advantage in hits (17-9), including three doubles. The Timberwolves went the entire game without a single error, compared to two for the Pioneers.

Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) had a big day for NU, going 4-for-5 with six RBI's. Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) went 2-4 with an RBI and scored three runs, while Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, ON / Christ the King Catholic Secondary) was a perfect 2-2 and scored two runs. Laura Walton (Clare, Mich.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored in the win.

NU's hitting continued in game two, scoring 10 runs in three innings. MU plated two runs in the first and another two in the fifth, but their lone run in the sixth would not be enough. Malone edged Northwood with nine hits, to eight for NU.

Gietl scored three runs in game two, while Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) registered two RBI's and scored two runs. Sebald also struck out eight batters from the circle on the way to picking up her third straight win. Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va. / Dubois Area) went 2-for-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) and Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) each had a triple, while Tostrud finished 3-4 with three runs scored.

The Timberwolves will be back in action on Thursday (April 16) to play a rescheduled game against Grand Valley State. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. Be sure to come dressed as your best beachwear for the Luau Party. CLICK HERE for all of the softball promotions.
