Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Grand Valley State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team sweeps doubleheader over Grand Valley State on Thursday afternoon (April 16). NU posted a 7-6 win after nine innings before earning a 5-4 win in game two.

The Timberwolves improve to 13-18 overall, 10-6 in the GLIAC. The Lakers fall to 26-12 on the year, 12-7 in the GLIAC.

Northwood scored five runs in the bottom of the third on six hits to take an early lead. GVSU responded by plating two in the fourth and four in the fifth, while NU only scored one in the fourth for a 6-6 tie through seven innings. Neither team was able to score in extra innings until Northwood had a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth. Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich.) singled to right field to score Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich. / Lakeshore) for the win.

Northwood tallied ten hits without a single error in game one. Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va. / Dubois Area) and Wontorcik each registered a pair of RBI's, while Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.), Wontorcik and Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) had a pair of hits in the win.

NU continued their momentum with a run in the top of the first inning of game two. Grand Valley State responded in the bottom of the second and again in the fourth, to pull ahead 4-1. Northwood's Lindsay Obremski hit a grand slam in the fifth to pull ahead 5-4. The Lakers were unable to score in the last three innings to close the game.

Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) picked up her fifth straight win for Northwood. GVSU held an edge in hits (8-5), while NU left just four runners on base. Obremski finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and five RBI's.

The Timberwolves travel to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (April 18). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
