Softball Drops Pair At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team fell to Saginaw Valley State 4-2 in game one before losing 9-1 in five innings of game two on Saturday afternoon (April 18).

The Timberwolves are now 13-20 overall, 10-8 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals improve to 22-15 on the year, 12-4 in GLIAC play.

In game one, Northwood allowed two runs in bottom of the third. NU responded with a run in the top of the fourth on a double by Laura Walton (Clare, Mich.) to score Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich. / Lakeshore). SVSU plated a pair in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Walton then earned another RBI in the top of the sixth to cut the lead 4-2 but it wouldn't be enough for the win.

Laura Walton finished with two RBI's on 2-3 batting. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich. / Dundee) picked up the loss striking out six batters in four innings pitched.

In game two, the Cardinals scored three runs in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth to take a 9-0 advantage. The Timberwolves struggled to plate a run, after registering a single hit in both the first and second innings. NU was able to plate a run in the bottom of the fifth, but SVSU's eight-run advantage would end the game after five innings.

Northwood travels to Wayne State tomorrow (April 19) with first pitch scheduled for Noon.
