Softball Sweeps Ferris State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team earned a pair of wins over Ferris State Wednesday afternoon (April 22). Despite varying weather conditions, NU picked up a 9-1 five inning win before downing the Bulldogs 14-4 in game two.

The Timberwolves are now 15-22 on the year, 12-10 in the GLIAC. Ferris State falls to 15-33 overall, 8-12 in the GLIAC.

In game one, Northwood scored a total of nine runs in the first two innings to pull ahead 9-0. The second inning included a pair of homeruns by Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) and Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich.). The Bulldogs responded with a run in the top of the third but neither team would score for the remainder of the game, ending after five innings.

Gietl and Wontorcik each finished with three RBI's, as Wontorcik went 3-for-3 and Gietl finished 2-for-3. Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) finished with a pair of RBI's on a double, while Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) struck out four batters and is now 6-12 with the win. Northwood left just four runners on base and held an 11-6 advantage in hits.

In game two, NU pulled ahead 2-0 to open the game before Jennifer Wontorcik hit a two-run homer to make it 4-0 going into the bottom of the first. FSU rallied with a two-run homerun to cut the lead to two. After plating a single run in the bottom of the fifth, Ferris State trailed 4-3 going into the top of the seventh. Northwood scored a total of ten runs in the top of the seventh on seven hits. The Bulldogs plated three in the bottom of the inning to give NU the win.

For the game, the Timberwolves recorded 15 hits and scored 14 runs on 35 at bats. Wontorcik finished with five RBI's (for a total of two homeruns and eight RBI's on the day). Eight different Timberwolves scored, including four with multiple runs. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich. / Dundee) started in the circle and faced 24 batters to pick up the win, before Sebald pitched the final 14 batters for the save.
