Softball Splits Pair In Florida

CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northwood University softball team split a pair of games Sunday afternoon (March 6). NU dropped a 6-2 contest to Northern State before earning a 7-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State.

The Timberwolves are now 2-2 on the season.  Northern St. is 6-3, while SMSU stands at 2-5.

Northwood took control early in game one, plating the first two batters of the game for a pair of runs in the first inning. With bases loaded Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) took a walk to score Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.). From there, Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) scored on an Abby Joseph (Garden City, Mich. / Garden City) RBI. Northern State responded with a grand slam in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 4-2. Neither team was able to score until the Wolves recorded a pair of runs in the top of the sixth for the 6-2 win.

NSU out-hit the Timberwolves 10-2 for the game and left seven runners on base, while NU drew five walks in the game and left four runners on base.

After Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two to score Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood), Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill. / Nazareth Academy) and Lynn recorded a pair of doubles to score four more runs. With a 5-0 lead going into the fifth, NU was able to plate a run in each of the next two innings for a 7-0 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth.

After pitching seven complete innings in game one a day ago, Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) picked up the win with six and a third innings pitched. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) finished the game in the circle against the final four batters.

For the game, Northwood out-hit SMSU 9-5. The Mustangs left 10 runners on base, while NU left nine. Lynn finished the game 2-4 with a double and a pair of RBI's, while Bartodziej went 2-3 and tallied three RBI's and a scored run. Gietl also went 2-3 and scored twice.

Northwood will return to action Monday (March 7) versus Minnesota State Mankato and St. Cloud State. Game times are set for 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.
