Softball Picks Up 8-2 Win Over UB, Loses 4-3 To UMD

CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northwood University softball team earned an 8-2 win over the University of Bridgeport before dropping a 4-3 contest to Minnesota Duluth on Friday afternoon (March 11).

The Timberwolves are now 7-5 overall. UB falls to 3-1, while UMD improves to 11-6 on the year.

Northwood scored in the first inning on an error with two outs. With the game tied 1-1 going into the fifth, Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) hit a double with one out to get into scoring position. Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) followed with a double of her own to score Lynn. Junior Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) then hit a home run to score two and put NU ahead 4-1.

In the seventh, Courtney Wensley (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score one run. Then, Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) hit a shot through the right side to score two. Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill. / Nazareth Academy) followed that with a single up the middle to score NU's eighth run.

For the game, Lynn and Wauters each went 1-1 with a run scored, as Lynn also drew a pair of walks. Wontorcik hit 2-3 with two RBI's, while Gietl hit a two-run homerun. Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) struck out six batters, while NU drew eight walks in the contest.

NU found themselves trailing a majority of game two. The Timberwolves were able to score one run in the third but still trailed 4-1 entering the fifth inning. After Wontorcik hit a home run with two outs, NU rallied again to score Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) on a Bartodziej single to trail 4-3. However, the Timberwolves would be unable to score for the remainder of the game for the loss.

Ostapowicz finished batting 3-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Bartodziej hit 2-3 along with an RBI. Both teams played significant defense, as there was just a single strikeout recorded between the two teams in the contest.

Northwood closes out the Florida trip on Saturday (March 12). NU is scheduled to play Cedarville at 9 a.m. and Philadelphia at 11 a.m.
