Softball Splits A Pair Against Davenport

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball teams split a pair of games against Davenport in the 2016 home opener at Fisher Stadium on Sunday afternoon (March 20).

The Timberwolves improve to 9-7 on the year, while the Panthers are now 18-7 overall.

In game one, NU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. DU responded with three runs in the second and another three runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead into the fifth. Northwood's Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead 6-3.

DU out-hit the Timberwolves 8-4 and left seven runners on base. Gietl finished 3-3 with a pair of RBI's, while Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich. / Lakeshore) also picked up a hit for the Timberwolves.

Davenport plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning of game two to take an early lead. NU responded in the bottom of the inning with a Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) two-run homerun to tie the game. In the top of the fifth, DU scored another run to take a 3-2 lead. NU's offense came alive in the bottom of the inning to score three runs on a pair of doubles, including a ball off the top of the fence by Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich. / Garden City). The Timberwolves faced bases loaded in the top of the sixth and seventh, only allowing a single run to score.

For the game, the Panthers stranded 15 runners on base and out-hit NU 12-8. Maggie Mullen (New Buffalo, Mich. / New Buffalo) picked up the win for Northwood and is now 3-2 on the year. Northwood registered eight hits in game two, four of which were extra base hits (three doubles, one homerun).

The Timberwolves travel to Ohio next weekend, taking on Findlay on Friday (March 25). The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
