Softball Earns 8-3 Win Over Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team splits a pair of games at Hillsdale on Saturday afternoon (March 26). NU earned an 8-3 win before falling to HC 7-4 in game two.

The Timberwolves currently stand at 10-10 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC. The Chargers are 8-4 on the year, 3-1 in the GLIAC.

NU brought offense early, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of game one. The Timberwolves followed that up with a three-run homerun by Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) to take a 5-0 lead in the second. After adding two more runs in the third and another in the seventh the Timberwolves finished with an 8-3 win. Northwood was able to get out of a bases loaded jam three times. Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) picked up the win in the circle, pitching six innings against 32 batters. Brown is now 4-1 on the year.

For the game, NU out-hit HC 12-7 and left 11 Chargers stranded on base throughout the game. D'Avilar finished with two hits and four RBI's, while Courtney Wensley (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) went three for three with a run scored. Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning (Cleveland State) and Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill. / Nazareth Academy) each registered an RBI and run scored, as Look went 2-4. 

In game two, the Chargers got on the board early plating three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. The Timberwolves responded with three runs in the second, cutting the lead down 5-3. Hillsdale increased the lead 7-3 in the fifth. NU plated one final run in the seventh but didn't get any closer to fall 7-4.

D'Avilar finished with two hits and an RBI in game two. Look added a pair of hits and a run scored, while Tostrud and Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) each recorded a double along with D'Avilar.

The Chargers out-hit NU 10-8 in game two and neither team registered an error. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) pitched five and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts, while Maggie Mullen (New Buffalo, Mich. / New Buffalo) earned the loss in the circle.

Northwood returns home to host Lake Superior State on Tuesday (March 29). The doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
