The 2024 season will be the eighth for Gregg Sauve at the helm of the Northwood University softball program. Since being named Northwood's eighth head coach in the summer of 2016, Sauve has guided the Timberwolves to six straight winning seasons including five trips to the conference tournament and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. He has posted a 177-136-1 record at Northwood, including a .564 winning percentage which is the best for a softball coach in Northwood history.

Northwood turned in another strong season in 2023, going 34-24 overall with a 15-9 conference mark in their first season in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Timberwolves had four players earn all-conference honors. 

In 2022, they finished the year with a 29-15 overall record while going 15-10 in the GLIAC. Five Timberwolves earned All-GLIAC honors at the end of the season.

The 2021 campaign saw the Timberwolves reach the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, ending the year with a 29-16 record. The .644 winning percentage is the fourth-best in program history. NU finished second in the GLIAC in the regular season and reached the GLIAC Tournament finals.

Sauve guided Northwood to one of its best seasons in school history in 2019. NU won its most games (31) in 13 years and reached the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the second time in program history.

In 2018, the Timberwolves returned to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since the 2014 season. NU reached the postseason despite season-ending injuries to their top two pitchers. Northwood also picked up a win in the GLIAC Tournament, defeating Ashland 9-7.

In his first year as head coach, Northwood posted a 19-25 overall record while going 10-12 in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves missed out on the GLIAC Tournament narrowly due to a tiebreaker. NU finished the year with a .455 winning percentage in conference play one year after Northwood had a .269 clip (7-19).

Sauve brings over 40 years of experience in fastpitch softball to the program in both the men’s and women’s games. Over the past three seasons, he has been an assistant coach at Northwood, working with all aspects of the program. During his time coaching, he has been a part of four state championships and over 40 World and National Tournament appearances. Sauve was a part of the 2013 Midland Emerson Aces staff that took home the ISC II World Championship. He also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Midland High School.

Gregg and his wife Terri reside in Midland. They have two sons: Brett and Nicholas.
