OVERVIEW

MEET: GVSU HOLIDAY OPEN

LOCATION: Grand Valley St. – Allendale, Mich.

RECAP: Northwood track & field opened their indoor season at the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday (December 7). The Timberwolves saw one event winner, four NCAA Provisional marks, and multiple newcomers made noise of their own.

INSIDE THE MEET

FOR THE MEN

  • Northwood's Sebastian Tesch got his indoor season off to a strong start. His 19.50m toss in the weight throw won the event, setting a personal record (PR) and clearing the NCAA Provisional (Provo) in the process. He is now third in NU's top ten.
  • 2023 NCAA Indoor All-American, Dillan Haviland, started the indoor season where he left indoor last year. His first-ever indoor 5K cleared the NCAA Provo mark with a 14:20.05 finish and was just four seconds off the school record.
  • Blake Vier set a new PR with an 8.09 finish during the 60m hurdle prelims. He moves him into third in program history. Matheu Morrison (8.25 - PR) and Vier (8.35) later took third and fourth in the 60m hurdle finals a few hours later. Morrison moves into fifth in NU history for his finish.
  • Will Nemecek took fifth in the shot put invite, setting a PR at 17.41m on his final toss. The toss cleared the NCAA Provo mark as he moved up to second in program history.
  • Jon Kelm took third in the long jump, leaping 6.96m on his third attempt. Kelm (7.18) also ran the 60m. He had the second-best finish behind teammate and freshman, Andrew Braman (7.15).

FOR THE WOMEN

  • Sarah Zehr (18:03.16), Taylor Hopkins (18:14.57), and Rachael Sierakowski (18:36.14) were Northwood's top finishers in the 5K. All three set new PRs as Zehr and Hopkins moved up to sixth and seventh on NU's top-10 performers list for the indoor 5K.
  • Keiyera Johnson hurdled her way into her first collegiate meet, running a 9.57 60m hurdle in prelims. That mark moves her to third in program history in her first-ever college race. Johnson later ran the 200m, finishing in 26.14. Her 200m race puts her eighth on NU's top-10 list.
  • Emily Stinson competed in her first collegiate meet in weight throw. Her 15.71m toss earned her a third place finish.
  • Kelsey Hansen also began her collegiate career during the meet. Hansen took second in the shot put with a 12.87m toss on her fifth attempt. Teammate Stinson earned her second third place finish of the meet just behind Hansen at 12.49m.
