Track & Field Notches Seven NCAA Provisional Marks At GVSU's Big Meet

OVERVIEW 

MEET: BIG MEET

LOCATION: GVSU – ALLENDALE, MICH.

RECAP: Northwood track & field took to Allendale, Mich. this weekend to compete at GVSU's annual Big Meet. Over 1800 athletes from over 100 teams were in attendance. The Timberwolves notched seven NCAA provisional marks during competition on Friday and Saturday.

FRIDAY RESULTS

FOR THE MEN 

  • Blake Vier broke the 8-second barrier of the 60m hurdles. The sophomore qualified for the finals with an NCAA provisional mark of 8.13 during prelims before taking fourth overall with the 16th-best mark in DII this season at 7.97. Vier is only the third athlete in NU history to run a sub-8, 60m hurdle race.
  • Jon Kelm broke his personal record (PR) during the long jump by 17cm. His 7.39m NCAA provisional clearing mark during his second attempt placed him third overall in the long jump invite and is 14th-best in DII this season.
  • Dillan Haviland, Brandon Boyd, and Preston Earl competed in the 3000m races. Haviland was NU's best finisher with an NCAA provisional clearing mark of 8:09.28, with Boyd next at 8:38.44 and Earl just behind at 8:40.50.
  • For the third time this season, Will Nemecek hit 17.41m during the shot put invite. He surpassed the NCAA provisional mark, earning him a fourth place finish during the event.
  • Sebastian Tesch (18.94m) and Luke Eros (18.45m) were the best Timberwolves in the weight throw invite. The duo took sixth and seventh overall, each surpassing the NCAA provisional mark in the process.
  • Sam Smith and Lucas Oberle set new PRs in the 5K. In heat six, Smith was the first Timberwolf to cross the finish at 14:56.19 and Oberle next at 15:01.94. Smith's mark makes him ninth all-time for NU 5K performers.
  • Thomas Heslip finished at 1:24.18 during the 600m race. 

 FOR THE WOMEN

  • In the mile, Taylor Hopkins led all Timberwolves, finishing 23rd with a PR of 5:04.12.
  • Sarah Zehr ran a sub-18-minute 5K for the first time in her career, shaving off nearly 13 seconds with her 17:51.95 finish in heat four of the racers. This mark moves her up a spot, to fifth all-time for NU 5K racers.
  • Also, in the mile, Ariel Warner finished at 5:19.01 during the section four race.
  • In heat four of the 5K, Rachael Sierakowski finished at 18:52.41 with Riley Hacker just behind at 19:04.85.
  • Kelsey Hansen and Emily Stinson competed in the weight and shot put events. Stinson took 16th with a 15.41m toss in the weight throw while Hansen finished 21st with a mark of 15.17m. Hansen took 14th in the shot with her best mark of 12.59m and Stinson 18th with a toss of 12.43m.

SATURDAY RESULTS

FOR THE MEN 

  • Haviland, Earl, Yamar Lyons, and Brandon Thompson teamed up to take sixth overall in the men's DMR. NU's foursome finished with NU's fourth-best all-time DMR mark of 9:51.86, surpassing the NCAA provisional mark and moving them into the top 25 of DII this season.
  • Arthur Powell IV ran a 7.13 60m dash during the sixth heat of races. He was the first Timberwolf to cross the line with Kelm just behind at 7.20.
  • Matheu Morrison placed second in the 60m hurdle sections with a mark of 8.26. Vier finish just behind with a mark of 8.31.

FOR THE WOMEN

  • The Timberwolves' DMR team of Hopkins, Keiyera Johnson, Katherine Haupt, and Warner took 13th at 12:08.29. This is the third-best DMR mark in NU history.
  • Brooklyn Wolcott ran just off her personal best in the 400m race, placing 25th, finishing in 1:00.24. Teammates, Gabby Jones (1:01.28) and Nava Sanocki (1:01.37) placed just behind her in 35th and 36th respectively.
  • Hattie Veenkant led all Timberwolves in the 3000m race. Veenkant finished at 11:05.03 during section three of the event races.
  • Johnson (9.80), Jones (9.82), and Jenna Gaul (10.12) competed in the 60m hurdles, placing 29th, 30th and 41st.
  • Along with Veenkant, Alyssa Dorn (11:32.78) and Kaylee Aultman (11:49.44) also ran in the 300m section four of the races. 
  • In the 4x400m, Sanocki, Jones, Gaul, and Molly Kitson combined to run the third-fastest race in program history at 4:03.49.

UP NEXT

  • Track & field is back on the track for SVSU's Tune-Up on Friday (February 16). This is the team's last meet before they head to Ashland for the conference championships February 23-24.
