Track & Field Competes At SVSU's Tune-Up Friday Evening

MEET: TUNE-UP

LOCATION: SVSU – UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH.

RECAP: Northwood track & field competed in their final meet before the Great Midwest Indoor Championships next weekend (February 23-24).

INSIDE THE MEETS

FOR THE MEN

  • Dillan Haviland continues to inch ever so close to the four-minute mile. Haviland reset his program and conference record mile, improving his mark by .31 seconds to 4:01.15. His new mark is No. 9 in DII and No. 1 in the G-MAC this season. He surpassed the NCAA provisional mark with his time.
  • A week out from breaking the eight-second barrier, Blake Vier won the 60m hurdle finals with a mark of 8.05. Also in the race, teammate Matheu Morrison took second overall, finishing in 8.16. Both racers cleared the NCAA provisional mark in the process.
  • Thomas Heslip ran his first 400m race of the year. The junior took first overall, finishing in 50.44.
  • Arthur Powell IV ran the fastest time for a Timberwolf in the 60m dash this season at 7.06 during prelims. He later took fifth in the finals, finishing in 7.08. 
  • Sebastian Tesch won the weight throw competition. Tesch's 19.64m mark surpassed the NCAA provisional mark during the event.
  • Also in the mile, Preston Earl (4:11.71), Brandon Boyd (4:13.00), and Carson Laney (4:16.56) all set new PRs en route to taking sixth, eighth, and ninth overall for the event. Earl improved his fourth all-time program mark as Boyd moved to fifth. 
  • Jon Kelm won the triple jump event, clearing a season-best 13.68m. Kelm also took the crown in the long jump, leaping 6.95m.
  • Will Nemecek took the crown in the shot put event, surpassing the NCAA provisional mark with a 16.95m toss.

FOR THE WOMEN

  • Keiyera Johnson (9.45) and Jenna Gaul (9.55) took sixth and seventh, respectively in the 60m hurdle finals. With their new PR marks, Johnson improves her No. 3 mark in program history, and Gaul moves into fourth all-time for the event. 
  • In the 800m race, Katherine Haupt (2:15.94), Taylor Hopkins (2:17.43), Ariel Warner (2:18.88), and Sarah Zehr (2:23.20) all set new PRs, taking second, third, fifth and eighth overall. Haupt (third), Hopkins (fourth), and Warner (seventh) all improved their all-time marks in program history.
  • Kelsey Hansen and Emily Stinson finished one and two for both shot and weight throw events. In the weight throw, Hansen eclipsed the 16m mark for the first time in her career with a 16.29m toss during her final attempt. Stinson placed just behind at 15.19m. Hansen also won the shot competition with a 13.09m toss. Stinson took second as well with a 12.67m mark.
  • Rebecca Hoonhorst took seventh in the women's long jump with a 4.54m leap during her final leap.
  • In the 4x400m relay, a team of Gabby Jones, Johnson, Brooklyn Wolcott, and Warner combined to run NU's third fastest relay ever. Their mark of 4:02.86 was fourth overall.
