Track & Field Earns Two Golds At 2024 G-MAC Indoor Championships

OVERVIEW 

MEET: 2024 GREAT MIDWEST INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOCATION: ASHLAND – ASHLAND, OHIO

RECAP: Northwood track & field began their chase for conference superiority Friday (February 23) at the 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Indoor Championships. The women's team took eighth overall with 10 points while the men took fifth with 56. Ashland's women (148.50 points) and Tiffin's men (147) were each crowned conference champions as a team during the meet. Overall, Northwood had fourth athletes earn All-Conference honors in the process.

INSIDE THE MEETS

DAY 1 - FRIDAY RESULTS

FOR THE MEN

  • Matheu Morrison and Blake Vier both qualified for the 60m hurdle finals on Saturday (February 24). Morrison edged out Vier running an 8.04 personal record (PR) race in heat one of the prelims. Vier ran in heat three, with an 8.07 finish. Both times surpassed the. NCAA Provisional marks.
  • Jon Kelm was the Timberwolves' lone podium finisher Friday afternoon. Kelm took third in the long jump with a 7.25m NCAA Provisional clearing mark on his third attempt. His finish gave NU six team points for the men. Kelm takes Third Team All-G-MAC honors with his podium  (top-3 finishers for a respective event).
  • Sebastian Tesch added three team points in a loaded weight throw field, taking sixth overall with a toss of 19.75m on his fourth attempt. All point scorers (top eight finishers), including Tesch, surpassed the NCAA Provisional mark.
  • The men's distance medley relay team of Preston Earl, Thomas Heslip, Brandon Thompson, and Dillan Haviland placed fourth with NU's fourth-best all-time program finish, 9:51.56, scoring five team points.
  • Carson Laney added a team point, taking eighth overall with a 15:03.18 finish in the 5K.

 FOR THE WOMEN

  • Ariel Warner, Keiyera Johnson, Katherine Haupt, and Taylor Hopkins teamed up for the women's distance medley relay, finishing in 12:07.22, scoring two team points and cutting another second off Northwood's third-best all-time program time.
  • In the 60m hurdles, Jenna Gaul set a new PR of 9.51 in heat three of prelims with a 14th-place finish.

DAY 2 - SATURDAY RESULTS

FOR THE MEN

  • For the second year in a row, Dillan Haviland took home the mile crown. Haviland recorded a 4:05.15 mark to take the title and earn 10 team points for the squad. His mark cleared the NCAA provisional mark in the process. Haviland takes First Team All-G-MAC honors with his win.
  • Will Nemecek won his first G-MAC Championship for the shot put. The junior finished first overall with a 17.38m toss, clearing the NCAA Provisional mark to become the second Northwood athlete to win the G-MAC Indoor shot put title (Zac Stickler – 2023). Nemecek was named First Team All-G-MAC honors with the win.
  • Blake Vier added a podium finish in the 60m hurdles for the Timberwolves, finishing third in 8.03. Teammate, Morrison added a fifth-place finish at 8.05. The two combined for 10 team points for the event. With his finish, Vier earned Third Team All-G-MAC honors by placing in the top three.
  • Also in the mile, Earl added two more team points, taking seventh with a PR of 4:09.78 to clear the NCAA Provisional mark as well. He moves into third all-time for NU's indoor mile.
  • Brandon Boyd tacked on two points for men in the 3000m race. Boyd placed seventh overall, finishing in 8:25.85.
  • Luke Eros also added two points in the shot put. He took seventh with a 14.90m PR throw. He cleared his previous PR by over a meter.

 FOR THE WOMEN

  • Kelsey Hansen improved her PR in the shot put event. The freshman placed fifth overall, earning four team points, with a best mark of 13.75m. Her toss also surpassed the NCAA Provisional mark.
  • Taylor Hopkins gave the women's side two team points to start Saturday off. She took seventh in the mile at 5:08.25. Hopkins also took home a top-10 finish in the 3000m race finishing in 10:16.64.
  • Also, in the 3000m, Sarah Zehr ran a 3-second PR finishing in 10:23.64.
  • Warner (2:16.47 PR) and Haupt (2:18.92) were NU's best placers in the women's 800m race. Warner's PR moved her to fourth in program history for the event with her finish.
  • Molly Kitson, Brooklyn Wolcott, Keiyera Johnson, and Warner improved NU's third-best, 4x400m relay in program history, placing seventh and adding two points by finishing with a 4:02.42 finish.
  • Also, in the shot put, Emily Stinson cleared the 13m mark for the first time in her career. Stinson placed 10th with a 13.19m toss.
