Women's Basketball Falls In Final Moments At No. 18 Lewis 76-73

The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a heart-breaker Sunday afternoon (November 10), falling at Lewis 76-73.

The Timberwolves are now 1-1 overall on the season.  Lewis improves to 2-0 with the win.

The contest was a battle from the very beginning. The Flyers got off to an early lead, but Northwood was able to tie the game at the 12:38 mark. With 7:58 remaining, Lewis took a one point lead 23-22. From there, Lewis went on an 8-0 run to make the score 31-22 with 4:06 remaining in the first half. Sarah Susan (Byron Center, Mich.) netted two three-pointers in the final 2:30 to cut the lead to two. The Flyers led 36-34 at the break, thanks in large part to shooting 47.1 percent from the floor (16-34) and out-rebounding the Timberwolves (22-17) in the half. 

Northwood quickly tied the game at 36, but trailed for a majority of the second half. It wasn't until the 7:07 mark that NU was able to take the lead 62-60. The Flyers went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead 66-62. Northwood took the lead 69-68 on a layup by Sarah Susan with 4:35 remaining. The Flyers netted a jump shot to make it 70-69. Sarah Susan scored another layup to retake the lead 71-70 at the 1:32 mark. Lewis quickly netted a jump shot to make it 71-72 before Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich.) took the lead 73-72 with 0:55 remaining in the game. Lewis capitalized on a missed free throw by Northwood to retake the lead for the final time 74-73 at the 0:24 left.

For the game, Northwood shot 38.4 percent from the floor (28-73), compared to 49.2 percent for the Flyers. The Flyers held the advantage in rebounding (42-41).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures for the game, led by Robak. She netted 17 points, going 7-17 from the floor and 2-4 in 3-point field goals. Kaitlin Susan registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with three steals. Recording her second consecutive double-double, Aleigha Wyle (Midland, Mich.) scored 11 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had a pair of blocks. Sarah Susan finished with 15 points, shooting 5-11 from the field. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) netted eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

Northwood returns to action November 22 at the Quincy University Subway Tip-off Classic. The Timberwolves will face William Penn for a 6 p.m. EST contest in Quincy, Ill.
