Women's Basketball Downs Grand Valley 73-64

The Northwood University women's basketball team posted its fifth straight win with a 73-64 win over Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (January 25).

NU is now 10-6 overall, 8-4 in the GLIAC.  GVSU falls to 9-7 overall, 7-5 in the GLIAC.

GVSU was the better team in the opening half, never allowing Northwood to at any point. The Lakers 33-26 lead at halftime matched their biggest advantage in the opening 20 minutes. NU shot just 28.6 percent from the floor in the half (8-28).

The second half was a different story, as the Timberwolves controlled the play.  Northwood scored 23 of the first 31 points of the half to open up a 49-41 lead. The Lakers got no closer than five points the rest of the way.  NU's performed at a much higher level after the break, shooting 48.0 percent from the floor (12-25) while going 20-24 from the foul line (83.3 percent).

For the game, Northwood finished at 37.7 percent overall (20-53) while GVSU shot 38.1 percent (24-63). Both teams connected on five triples in the game.  NU won the game at the foul line, making 28-34 overall (82.4 percent) compared to 11-15 for GVSU (73.3 percent).

Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) led the way for Northwood, scoring a game-high 22 points. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) added 16 points, six rebounds three assists and three steals.  Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) ended up with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Northwood will head north to face Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 30). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
