Women's Basketball Drops 83-75 Contest To No. 9 Lewis

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 83-75 contest against No. 9 Lewis Saturday night (November 15).

The contest was the finale of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, hosted by Northwood.

Northwood led for the majority of the opening half, leading from the 12:25 mark until the end of the half. NU was up by as many as 10 at 36-26 with 6:52 remaining. Lewis chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting the margin down to 40-39 at halftime.  The Timberwolves shot 47.1 percent in the half (16-34) while the Flyers finished at 42.9 percent.  

Northwood maintained their lead into the second half as well, eventually holding a 71-65 lead with just over five minutes remaining.  But the final 3:21 of the game proved to be the difference, as the Flyers took a 73-69 deficit and turned it into a win, scoring 14 of the final 16 points of the game. Lewis got the job done on both ends of the floor, going 4-4 from the floor and 5-6 from the foul line. Northwood went 1-5 from the floor and 2-4 from the line in that same stretch.

For the game, Northwood finished at 42.9 percent overall (27-63) while Lewis shot 40.9 percent (27-66). Both teams connected on eight 3-pointers as well. It was the foul line that proved to be the difference in the contest. A night after Northwood went 22-24 from the foul line (91.7 percent), the Timberwolves connected on just 13-24 against the Flyers (54.2 percent). Meanwhile, Lewis finished at 84.0 percent (21-25). The Timberwolves led for nearly 27 minutes of the game, while Lewis was on top for just under nine.

Five Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by freshman Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.). She came off the bench to score 17 points, going 5-10 from the floor and 4-8 from 3-point range. Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Emily Kutch came off the bench to score 13. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) and Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) finished with 12 and 10, respectively.

Northwood will travel to Indianapolis November 25 for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
