Women's Basketball Loses At No. 11 Wayne State 66-62

DETROIT, MICH. - The Northwood University women's basketball teams drops 66-62 contest at No. 11 Wayne State on Sunday afternoon (December 7).

The Timberwolves fall to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC. The Warriors improve to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the GLIAC with the win.

In the opening period, neither team was able to establish an advantage as the first eight minutes saw seven ties. Against the 11th ranked-team in the country, the Timberwolves struggled to find consistency on offense. There were a total of nine lead changes before halftime, as the Warriors took a 34-31 lead into the locker room. NU finished the half shooting just 32.4 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Warriors Shareta Brown netted 17 first-half points to go along with eight rebounds.

Both teams came out of the locker room struggling, as NU began the second half with four fouls, six turnovers and five missed shots before scoring their first basket at 14:45. The Warriors went on a 10-0 run in that same period to hold a 44-31 advantage. NU cut the deficit to within seven with an Emily Kutch (Freeport, Mich. / Lakewood) three-pointer at 7:55. It wasn't until after the final media timeout that the Timberwolves were able to convert and apply pressure on the Warriors, cutting the lead to five at 2:43 (61-56). Another three from Kutch put NU within four, 63-59 at 1:34. After a couple of free throws, NU fought to within a two possession game with 0:22 remaining (64-60). Jordyn Nurenberg (St. Johns, Mich) put in her own offensive rebound with 0:10 left to trail by two but would not be able to get any closer.

For the game, NU finished shooting 33.9 percent from the floor (20-59) and 31.3 percent (5-16) from three-point range. The Warriors held a close 43-42 advantage on the boards, while NU registered 20 turnovers. Brown finished with 26 points on 12-15 from the free throw line and 19 rebounds, including seven offensive.

Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes) led the Timberwolves with 16 points and two steals. Kutch finished with 14, while Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) added 10 points and eight rebounds. The Susan sisters, Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Byron Center) and Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Byron Center) also finished with eight rebounds.

The Timberwolves will be back home next week on Thursday (Dec. 11) at 6 p.m. against Walsh and Saturday (Dec. 13) at 5 p.m. versus Malone. CLICK HERE for the complete basketball promotional calendar.
