Women's Basketball Defeats Malone 70-46

MIDLAND, MICH. - The Northwood University women's basketball team defeats Malone 70-46 on Saturday evening (December 13).

The Timberwolves improve to 5-3 overall, 3-1 in the GLIAC. The Pioneers fall to 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC.

Northwood got out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game in less than two minutes. NU would not look back, as the Timberwolves did not lose the lead for the remainder of the game. Northwood held a 16 point advantage with 1:09 remaining in the first half to take a 37-21 lead into the locker room. Junior Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes) led all scorers with 10 points in the opening period, while Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Byron Center) recorded three blocks. Northwood had 14 points off the bench, compared to just four for the Pioneers.

NU came out of the locker room with just as much intensity in the second half, starting the period with a 5-0 run. After going on multiple runs in the second half, Northwood held a 29 point lead with 11:17 remaining (59-30). The Pioneers fought back to get within 18 but would not get any closer. Northwood shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the floor and held Malone to 32.1 percent on 18-56. The Timberwolves also held an advantage in second chance points (12-2) and points off turnovers (16-4). NU did not trail in either game this week.

For the game, Robak finished with a game-high 18 points. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) registered 13 points to go along with eight assists and just two turnovers. Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich. / Midland) added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Northwood will compete in Detroit, Mich. In the Wayne Classic next weekend, hosted by Wayne State University. The Timberwolves will play Bellarmine on Friday (December 19) at 5 p.m. before taking on Salem International on Saturday (December 20) with a tip at 2 pm.
