Women's Basketball Defeats Lake Erie 64-46

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Northwood University women's basketball team earned a 64-46 win at Lake Erie Sunday afternoon (January 4).

The Timberwolves have now won five of six overall to stand at 8-4 overall, 4-2 in the GLIAC. Lake Erie falls to 7-5 overall, 2-4 in the GLIAC. The road team has won all five games in the series between Northwood and Lake Erie (NU – 3-0 at LEC, LEC 2-0 at Northwood).

Northwood scored on their first possession of the game and would not trail the rest of the way. NU's biggest lead was 28-14 before settling for a 29-20 lead at the break. NU shot just 36 percent from the floor in the half (9-25) but held LEC to a 32.0 percent clip (8-25).

NU got the lead to 19 in the second half but the Storm fought back. Lake Erie cut the lead down to 45-37 with seven minutes remaining. That is when the Timberwolves made the decisive run to clinch the win. Northwood scored 10 straight points, putting the lead back up to 18 at 55-37. Lake Erie got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood shot 38.5 percent overall (20-52) while Lake Erie finished at 36.2 percent (17-47). The big key to the game came at the 3-point line. Northwood went 9-20 from beyond the arc (45.0 percent) compared to Lake Erie at 1-10 (10.0 percent).  NU also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Lake Erie 43-26. That led the Timberwolves to a 15-2 edge in second chance points.

Freshman Maddy Selley (Alma, Mich.) led all scorers in the game, finishing with 15 points.  She went 6-12 from the floor while connecting on a pair of 3-pointers. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 13 points, while Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) had 10 points and five rebounds.

Northwood will host Tiffin Thursday night (January 8). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
