Women's Basketball Falls At No. 15 Michigan Tech 68-63

HOUGHTON, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 68-63 contest at No. 15 Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 29).

Northwood falls to 12-7 overall, 8-5 in the GLIAC. MTU improves to 16-1 overall, 12-1 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves led early by four points, but MTU responded with a strong finish to the half. The Huskies opened up seven point leads on two separate occasions, including the 33-26 advantage they owned at halftime. Northwood shot 34.5 percent from the floor in the half (10-29), while Michigan Tech finished at 42.3 percent (11-26).

The second half went back and forth, with both teams making runs. It appeared the Huskies were on the verge of cruising to an easy win, leading by 13 with less than six minutes to go in the game. But the Timberwolves fought back, scoring 16 of the next 21 points to cut the lead down to 65-63 with less than a minute remaining in the game. MTU connected on three straight key free throws to close out the game and earn the win.

Overall, Northwood finished at 36.1 percent from the floor (22-61). The Timberwolves went 7-18 from 3-point range (38.9 percent) and 12-18 from the foul line (66.7 percent). Michigan Tech finished at 42.3 percent from the floor (22-45), 5-11 from 3-point range (45.5 percent) and 19-22 from the foul line (86.4 percent). NU committed just eight turnovers for the game but was out-rebounded by the Huskies 38-28.

Leading the way for Northwood was freshman Maddy Seeley, who made her first career collegiate start a memorable one. She scored a career-high 27 points, going 8-16 from the floor and 5-9 from 3-point range. Seeley also added three rebounds and three steals. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) ended up with 14 points.

Northwood will travel to Northern Michigan Saturday (January 31). Game time is set for 11 a.m.
