Women's Basketball Falls At Northern Michigan 63-50

MARQUETTE, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 63-50 contest at Northern Michigan Saturday (January 31).

Northwood falls to 12-8 overall, 8-6 in the GLIAC. Northern Michigan improves to 12-6 overall, 10-4 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves were the better team in the opening half, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the game. NU never trailed in the half and earned a 31-27 lead at the break. Northwood shot 33.3 percent from the floor (10-30) compared to NMU at 52.6 percent (10-19), but the Timberwolves committed seven fewer turnovers (9-2) and held an 8-1 advantage in offensive rebounds to earn the lead.

Northern Michigan came out fast in the second half, scoring 13 of the first 15 points of the half to open up a 40-33 lead.  The Wildcats eventually opened up a 47-37 lead with 10:30 remaining, but Northwood fought back. The Timberwolves had the ball twice in the final four minutes with a chance to cut into a four point lead, but were unable to convert. NMU finished the game on a 10-1 run in the final 3:30 to finish off the win.

Poor shooting cost the Timberwolves a chance to win, as Northwood finished the game at 28.8 percent overall (17-59) and 25.0 percent from 3-point range (6-24) NU went just 7-29 from the floor in the second half (7-24) and 1-11 from 3-point range (9.1 percent). NMU ended up at 48.9 percent overall (22-45) and 38.5 percent from 3-point range (5-13). Northwood committed seven fewer turnovers than the Wildcats (15-8) but NU's advantage in points off turnovers was just one point (13-12).

Freshman Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) led the way for Northwood for the second straight game, finishing with 15 points. She was the lone Timberwolf to finish in double figures. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) finished with nine points, while Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's, Mich.) came off the bench to score eight points and grab seven rebounds.

Northwood will travel to Lake Superior State Monday night (February 2). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
