Women's Basketball Defeats Lake Superior State 69-54

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team picked up a 69-54 road win over Lake Superior State University Monday night (February 2).

Northwood improves to 13-8 overall, 9-6 in the GLIAC. LSSU falls to 7-12 overall, 3-12 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves played a strong opening half on both ends of the floor. Northwood led by as many as 19 in the half and ended up with a 39-21 lead at the break. NU shot 41.4 percent from the floor (12-29) and went 12-15 from the foul line (80.0 percent). The Lakers ended up at 32.0 percent overall (8-25) and 5-6 from the foul line (83.3 percent).

LSSU came out strong at the start of the second half, scoring the first 10 points in the opening 2:23 to cut the lead down to eight. Lake Superior State cut the lead down to seven at 45-38, but the Timberwolves responded with seven straight points to get the lead back up to 52-38. LSSU got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood shot 40.4 percent from the floor (21-52) overall while Lake Superior State ended up at 38.2 percent (21-55). The foul line was a big key to the win for Northwood, as NU out-scored LSSU 23-9 from the line. NU also finished with a 40-28 edge in rebounding for the game.

Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's, Mich.) came off the bench to finish with game-high in points (15) and rebounds  (nine). Emily Kutch (Freeport, Mich./Lakewood) added 13 points and five rebounds, while Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) had three blocked shots in the game, which gives her 117 for her career. That ties Susan with Savannah Stedman on the Northwood career blocked shots list.

Northwood will travel to Hillsdale Thursday night (February 5). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
