Women's Basketball Opens Season With 74-59 Win Over St. Joseph's

RENSSELAER, IND. – The Northwood University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a 74-59 road win over Saint Joseph's Saturday night (November 14).
The game was a part of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, hosted by St. Joes. Lewis and Saginaw Valley are also taking part in the event.
The opening two quarters of the game were very similar to each other – Northwood out-scored St. Joseph's 15-11 in the first quarter and 16-11 in the second quarter to take a 31-22 lead at halftime. The Timberwolves shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the half (9-24) but held the Pumas to 28.0 percent (7-25). Northwood also out-scored St. Joe's 10-6 from the foul line.
Both teams had their highest scoring quarter of the game in the third, thanks to good free throw shooting. Northwood went 14-17 from the line while St. Joseph's went 8-9. The Timberwolves ended up with a 26-21 advantage in the third to take a 57-43 lead to the fourth.
Northwood was never threatened in the fourth quarter, not allowing the Pumas any closer than 14 points. The Timberwolves led by as many 20 in the fourth.
For the game, Northwood shot 41.7 percent (20-48) while St. Joseph's finished at 34.0 percent (18-53). The Timberwolves made 6-17 from 3-point range (35.3 percent) and 28-35 from the foul line (80.0 percent). SJC finished 3-11 from beyond the arc (27.3 percent) and 20-28 from the foul line (71.4 percent). Northwood out-rebounded St. Joseph's 43-28 in the game.
Leading the way for Northwood was junior center Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's, Mich.). She finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double. Nurenberg finished 7-11 from the floor and 6-8 from the foul line. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 18 points, while Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) added 14. Taylor Roe (Portland, Mich.) came off the bench to finish with seven assists and three steals.
Northwood will take on No. 2 Lewis Sunday afternoon (November 15). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
