Women's Basketball Defeats Indianapolis 69-60

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team picked up a 69-60 win over Indianapolis Saturday afternoon (November 21).

The game was home opener for the Timberwolves. Northwood is now 2-1 on the season, while Indianapolis falls to 0-5 with the loss.

UINDY came out strong early on, opening up a seven point lead in the first quarter (12-5). The Timberwolves fought back to tie the game 14-14 before the Greyhounds took an 18-16 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter was tight as well – NU held the biggest advantage of the frame at five points. The score proved to be tied 33-33 at halftime. UINDY held the advantage in shooting percentage (42.9 percent to 35.7 percent), but Northwood out-scored the Greyhounds 11-5 at the foul line in the opening 20 minutes.

The Timberwolves got off to a great start in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points to take the biggest lead of the day at 42-33. But UINDY responded to the deficit, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to tie the game 44-44. Northwood eventually took a 50-47 lead to the fourth quarter.

NU led throughout the fourth quarter, but never got their lead into double figures. The Timberwolves nine-point advantage at the end of the contest matched the biggest lead of the game.

For the game, Northwood 38.2 percent from the floor (21-55) compared to UINDY at 43.6 percent (24-55). The Timberwolves earned the win thanks to out-scoring the Greyhounds 24-6 at the foul line and committing 12 fewer turnovers (21-9). That allowed Northwood to out-score UINDY 22-9 on points off turnovers, including 12-2 in the second half.

Leading the way for Northwood once again was junior center Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's, Mich.), who registered her third straight double-double to open the season. She finished with team-highs in points (15) and rebounds (14). For the season, Nurenberg is averaging 18.0 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) and Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Northwood will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska for three games next week. The Timberwolves will open play with a game against regional opponent Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday (November 26) at 5 p.m. ET.
