MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 76-71 contest to Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (January 16).
Northwood falls to 9-7 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC. SVSU improves to 11-4 overall, 8-2 in the GLIAC.
The first half was tight until the final minutes. SVSU scored the final seven points of the opening 20 minutes to earn a 43-33 lead at the break. Northwood dominated points in the paint 14-6 in the first stanza with the play of center Jordyn Nurenberg (St. Johns, Mich.), who had 11 points and six rebounds. She would finish with 18 points and 11 boards. Guard Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) went 3-for-4 from behind the arc, netting 11 in the first half to tie for the team lead.
Overall, Northwood shot 52% from the field (14-27) to Saginaw Valley's 47.1% (16-34), but the bench battle turned out to be huge as SVSU got 18 from their reserves to just six for the Timberwolves.
The second half saw a surge of inspired basketball played by the Timberwolves, who out-scored SVSU 26-12 in the frame. NU's bench came to life in the third, out-scoring SVSU 9-1.
The fourth quarter saw Northwood get a lead as big as five, but Saginaw Valley would not go away. The game was tied 67-67 with under three minutes to go, but a big 3-pointer by SVSU put the Cardinals up for good the rest of the way. NU cut the lead down to one in the final seconds, but SV made their free throws down the stretch to earn the win.
Overall, SVSU shot 41.3% from the field (26-63) to Northwood's 45.5% (25-55), but the Cardinals owned the second-chances points in the game, finish with an 11-2 edge.
Nurenberg registered another double-double in the game, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Seeley finished with 22 points, while Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 12. Zakiya Wells (Ypsilanti, Mich./Arbor Prep) had career-highs in points (10) and rebounds (six).
Northwood will host Ferris State Thursday night (January 21). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
